Troy Union Railroad crossing guard John Moriarity endures a heavy snowfall in the middle of the Broadway Street crossing at the south end of the Union Station, while an NYC Alco switch engine on track no. 1 places baggage cars to be loaded at the express section of the facility. Due to constant train and switching movements live flagmen, rather than gates, always guarded the two crossings at Broadway and Fulton Street, which were at either end of the station platforms and only a city block apart. This image ran on the front cover of the Trains December issue in 1956.
