A most unusual bird, the greater roadrunner is native to the Southwestern desert. The one in this sculpture is sunbathing while perched atop a prickly pear cactus. In his sleepy state he is oblivious to the lizard, even though it is one of his favorite meals. I see roadrunners occasionally in Sedona, AZ, where I live but they are usually running. They actually can run up to 40 miles per hour. Once while I was walking in the forest land behind my house, I saw one perched on top of a tall tree, and it inspired me to sculpt one that was resting.
