Child Amputee Yemen
Category - Documentary
[BPA2021-064]

Picture shows 9 year old Salah al Wahbei who lost his lower left leg when he stood on an anti-personel mine near his home in Marib in Yemen when he was outside playing with his brothers near his home. I photographed young Salah when I visited a Limb Fitting Ward in a hospital in Marib, Yemen. This was quite poignant for me as I am a double below knee leg amputee myself due to an I.E.D. blast when I was embedded with U.S. Marines in Afghanistan and also Salah was the same age as my youngest sonat the time. I gave him some words of encouragement via the interpreter as I know how difficult it can be on both a physical and emotional level to suddenly become an amputee overnight. I also gave him some practical advise on his prosthetic leg. Was pleasantly surprised that his hospital had a very good prosthetic unit.
