Our Lockdown Garden - On the 16th March suddenly and with little warning it was announced that those over 70 should isolate, all my father and I could do was talk through a glass door on our mobile phones. The initial photographs I took were mostly of my father behind glass and in the late afternoon light, the shadows reflecting the initial panic and anxiety we felt in his beautiful ancient garden, overlooking the Ouse river valley in Milton Keynes. As dad’s carer I continued to visit and after the initial shock we began to find that we could walk around the garden whilst keeping 3 metres apart. Over time my regular visits by bicycle to ‘the garden’ developed into a therapeutic process for dad and the other residents. I was able to build a relationship of trust whilst distant socialising with the other residents in the garden, allowing me to extend the project further. I have taken a series of portraits of them in their garden, using it as a shield and adding images of the garden to create diptychs that combine with their interview extracts. I hope to give our elders a voice, they are full of stories of resilience and have given me so much strength through this time. If someone were to ask me what helped me to get through the lockdown it would be my time spent with these wise and resilient people in this beautiful garden.
