Reclamation
wood panel, recycled materials, Mixed media, Acrylic on canvas

I wanted to explore my culture and cultural identity. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve felt that many people have tried to take my culture and my identity from me and have tried to turn it into something bad, tried to tell me it was barbaric, dirty, strange and something to be ashamed of. That was what got me thinking about my racial and cultural identity more, and how that affected my experience as a Canadian, an inspiration for this artwork. Through this piece, I wanted to represent the process of taking back what was taken from me, reclaiming any hurt that I have felt and turning it into something else. I wanted to demonstrate everything that my culture and cultural identity has given me, all the beauty, inspiration, memories, and community.
