‘Rewrite’ is a large-scale collage that explores positive and negative space. Made horizontally on the floor, the composition begins to emerge as the layers of canvas are placed on top of one another. Williams continually assesses space, line and shape by lifting the stretcher vertically at regular intervals. The pink/black/white palette emphasises the contrast between the masculine and feminine of colour (a recurring theme in Williams’ work), and highlights the forms of the cut and torn canvas edges.
