According to the William Glackens scholar, the late William Gerdts, Glackens began to investigate still life painting as early as 1915-16 and his still lifes started to appear regularly in numerous exhibitions throughout the 1920s-30s until the artist’s death. Painted in a stoneware pitcher and placed on a draped red cloth table top, Lillies and Other Flowers is an accomplished and excellent example of Glackens’ still life painting demonstrating his mastery of colorful impressionistic brushwork influenced by his admiration of the artist Pierre August Renoir.
