In 1954, Joe McVicker learned from a nursery school teacher that her kids found modeling clay too tough to manipulate, and on a whim, shipped a box of his Kutol cleaner – a canned moldable dough used to clean soot off of wallpaper - to the school. The teacher and kids loved the dough, inspiring Joe to quickly rework Kutol into the children's toy now known as Play-Doh.
