Wind among the trees on the riverbank , 1363

In their new life, Ni Zan’s family settled into an existence of, to quote, "simple sustenance, harmony, and happiness." However, in 1363 his wife died. In her memory he painted Wind Among the Trees – a desolate vision of neglected trees by the river’s shore. The inscription reads
On the riverbank the evening tide has fallen.
The windy trees have but sparse, frozen leaves.
Leaning on my staff I see the brushwood gate closed and silent.
I think of her, while the mountain colours lightly flicker.
