Throwing the salt is a great spiritual tradition in sumo. There is a belief in Japan that salt purify the thoughts, air and take away bad spirits. You can find small installations of salt in some restaurants, offices and in Japanese home.
Sumo rikishi throwing salt to protect their fight from bad spirits as well as help them in purify their minds.
