This work was created especially for INVOCATION DEMOCRACY. “Although I have become at times an artist for social justice through portraits I am asked to paint (which is very meaningful work for me), I have never really considered myself a political artist. I suppose when it comes to portraits what I am is a humanist. I seek to find the spirit in my subjects and convey them in a way that other humans can feel them, connect to them, and relate to them, as they view the portrait. So in this spirit, my aim is… to deeply feel as best I can, who Breonna was as a person, and to honor her life to the best of my abilities. My hope is that this will create an opportunity for people seeing the show to connect to her spirit through the image. When I first decided to do this portrait I kept seeing flowers and more flowers all around her. I have felt a little frustrated at not being able to find out more about who she was before she was murdered by the police… I learned that she brought lots of joy to people and was deeply loved by her boyfriend Kenneth Walker and her family members. I know she loved to dance and enjoy life with her friends. At the beginning of the first video I sat down to watch about Breonna, flashing quickly on the screen was a radiant photo of her with a wreath of flowers in her hair looking so beautiful, and I thought “she does love flowers!” And so I want to surround her with flowers.
