Blue-collar industries like meatpacking and brewing built up Milwaukee throughout much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. According to the railroad’s Reciprocal Switching List, the Milwaukee Road served almost 400 business industries in Milwaukee and the surrounding suburbs.
