Blue Felicia , 2021
PASTEL ON PAPER

"My artwork “Blue Felicia” is a portrait of my younger brother created using pastels on black paper. I chose to work with only blues and oranges because I felt that these contrasting colours could strengthen the darker parts of his clothes, the highlights on his face, and altogether give the painting life and a realistic effect. The name “Blue Felicia” is a blue and orange flower- part of the daisy family. I chose this title because the colours match the artwork’s and it plays a role in the meaning behind the piece, since the beautiful flower originates from the dry, hot and bleak parts of African deserts- representing an inner emotion shown in my brother’s facial expression, and body position.
