Cool and warm tone landscapes
Lisa Hochstein inspired

Lisa Hochstein is a painter and collage artist based in Santa Cruz, California. Her work references architectural structures and urban spaces, while exploring the richness of found material and colour. The collages represented here were created exclusively from the covers of sheet music published between 1900 and 1940. Lisa's studio practice includes paintings, intensively-laboured collages, and constructions that minimally alter the salvaged remnants of everyday life. By definition, collage is a process of selecting and recontextualizing. It invites contemplation of preservation and destruction, both inside and outside the studio. Her work relies on the specificity of precise human effort as well as the randomness of natural forces and accidental occurrences.
The students in Renaissance Academy discussed the ways Lisa’s collages were created and distinguished the tonal differences between them. Implementing the process used in creation of these collages, they have created cool or warm tone backgrounds for their landscape made out of painted newspaper pieces. Then to turn the abstract background into a figurative landscape they chose a respective animal that lives in a warm tropical or cold icy climate depending on the color they chose for their collages to paint.
To finish they collaged trees and bushes for a more defined look and their landscape collages were then complete.
