Born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1948, Alejandro Colunga is a highly respected painter and sculptor.

He grew up in a circus and many of his works are based on this theme, including most of those found in the Esteban Chapital Collection.

One of his pieces is a Gobelins tapestry, created in collaboration with the Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos, in Guadalajara. An Austrian immigrant took the Parisian Gobelins family’s dye-to-colour-perfection and vertical loom weaving technique to Guadalajara in the 1960s where a Japanese-Mexican family controls the business.
