Julia Colmenares - Edge II
Working reductively and additively with rags, brushes, rollers and squeegee; this mono-print reflects aspects of Colmenares' practice as a painter: accepting then rejecting the intuitive mark, until a visual balance is discovered. ‘Edge’ II refers to the forgotten, overgrown embankment that straddles a trickle of the River Roding near her home. Walking, running, avoiding, partaking; this fenced no-go zone captures the introspective space between reality and fantasy so often occupied during the last year and lockdown.

Whilst her current practice communicates a personal response and experience of landscape and nature, she is researching concerns of a larger collective consciousness anxious about the environment and man’s place in it.

Julia Colmenares is a painter and printmaker. Trained in San Francisco, the artist worked as an illustrator after completing a BA at the Academy of Art College (University), San Francisco. She studied painting, earning a Diploma in France, then completed an MA in Fine Art in London at Byam Shaw School of Art. She teaches drawing and painting privately and at Morley College. She has worked as a tutor/lecturer for both Central Saint Martins’ short courses and London Metropolitan University. She maintains a studio in East London and has exhibited in the UK, France, Poland and the United States.
