Victoria Dawson’s work explores the exposed fates of discarded military structures.
After researching and photographing military sites and abandoned buildings she creates a print response to reconstruct the textural elements of the concrete surfaces. By exploring controversial spaces, zones and hidden landscapes, Dawson explores issues such as power, ownership and surveillance. Her work invites the viewer to consider human presence and remnants in the landscape.
Dawson’s stencil monotypes of liminal landscapes examine the perceptions of traces and experience left behind by indexical means. The reconnaissance of the sites becomes part of the whole experience; these are places that are difficult to access. Extensive field research and exploration of military zones allows an insight into the radical changes occurring to these sites. Discovering controversial spaces, zones and hidden landscapes permits a reappraisal of our recent collective history.
Dawson graduated from the Slade School of Art in 1995 with a Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Sculpture and Anglia Ruskin University in 2017 with an MA in Printmaking.
She has exhibited widely in a number of solo shows and group exhibitions, including the New Contemporaries. Most recently she has shown in the Assembly Trust show in Norwich.
Her work is held in private collections in the UK and Europe.
