After many years as a painter, Lucy Ball became captivated by printmaking, enjoying the unpredictability of the process of etching and aquatint and the surprises it creates, providing her with a feeling of alchemically creating magic. It is a process requiring both creativity and patience, often slow but considered adherence to technical considerations. Considerations, which can of course, be bent and manipulated.
Lucy also sees printmaking as a cathartic process, exploiting the darkness of the technique, which perfectly suits much of her imagery, often of dark subject matter peppered with a similarly dark humour. Subject matter is also informed by literature and myth and the alchemical violence of the etching process perfectly suits these themes.
Like much of Lucy’s work, this collection of etchings explores themes of the human condition, relationships of people and of people and place.
Lucy studied Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art and, Later on, as a mature student, History of Art at Birkbeck College, University of London.

In 2018 she won third prize in the RBSA Print Prize Open Exhibition.

Lucy has exhibited at various shows from the 1980s to present, including the RWA Annual Open Exhibition on four occasions.
