Helen Taylor works in woodcut with watercolour to explore what grows in our own back gardens and local places and plants which are bred and live in 'captivity'. A possible future for many plant species, and for our experience of them, certainly those which may not be able to survive and adapt to long term changes to their environment and the threats brought by climate change. She is inspired by botanical and architectural ‘meeting’ places such as Kew Gardens, familiar to many, but also hidden places in her local area, closed and closeted secret spaces, which are located within ordinary working buildings, as well as more public spaces where people and plants unexpectedly intersect such as shopping centres.
Taylor’s work underlines the contrast of the human manufactured domain of hard edges and straight lines - containment, with the abundance and freedom of shape, form and colour of the natural world.
Taylor has a Masters degree in printmaking and has recently had works accepted for exhibition by Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Society Botanical Artists, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and Society of Women Artists. She has work in private collections in the UK, China and the US.
