This photograph captures the scene in which female students were taking a cookery class in the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School before the Queen visited the school.
In the 1950s and 1960s, if one passed an exam with a score of 11 or above, one had to choose to attend a boys’ school or a girls’ school. At the time, most grammar schools were either boys' or girls' schools.
What is interesting about the photo is that the girls were learning how to cook. Grammar schools for girls not only trained outstanding students to attend university but also nurtured wives of lawyers and doctors in middle-class families.
