The Self: Culture and Identity , 2021
54 x 64 x 1 in (h x w x d)
Installation/Construction

This installation should be seen as a shelter. Four walls, or puzzle pieces, that are built around an immovable object. They all come together with different grooves and edges to form this piece that represents self identity as a result of the cultural research of this project.

The sides leave the core exposed but protect its perimeter, forcing the circulation around the shelter. The outdoor conditions combined with the existing brick wall and Alumni Hall make it so each wall creates a new room. The conditions of each side are correlated with the meaning of each individual wall.

Each wall is built with what I now know and understand about my culture and identity. Two of the sides reflect ideas that have not changed, things that I have already known or still don't understand. The other two have to do with ideas recently uncovered and have gained much importance to my cultural identity. They show traits that I can relate too and that I appreciate from my heritage.

These sides can be seen as a global graph and a never ending climb.
The construction of the shelter was fully built by the existing wood on the site. The built wood structure is a metaphor for building more understanding for my heritage. The rest of the wood on site is part of the installation as is the alumni and the brick wall. It helps create the scene and should be noted that way.
