Portrait of Cydney Mar , 1980s

Cydney Mar is a third-generation Chinese, Scottish, and indigenous Canadian designer and entrepreneur. Growing up as a competitive figure skater, making skating costumes inspired Cydney to begin her career in the fashion industry after a catastrophic skating accident. At the age of twenty, Cydney opened her first design company to create couture fashions. Her goal was to understand what women wanted and what clothes would make them feel beautiful and celebrated in their everyday lives. Many of her designs incorporate Chinese elements and Asian themes. She once designed an oriental collection for the QVC Shopping Channel to celebrate different Chinese festivals. Cydney had two near-death experiences. One was her skating accident at the age of eighteen, and the other one was an immune system crash called Mono that happened five years ago. These traumatic experiences changed Cydney’s perspectives on life and on chasing her dreams. Today, she established a wellness company and became a career coach to help young designers actualize their ideas.
