Article about Cydney , 1980s
paper

This early 1980s magazine article features Cydney Mar, a third-generation Chinese, Scottish, and indigenous Canadian designer and entrepreneur. It reads, “Talented young designers are always an inspiration since it is they who will shape the fashion of the Eighties. Cydney Mar, at 22, is in her second year of business, opening doors across the country and proving that technical training is not the only criterion by which to judge a designer. Creativity and good working habits are the keys to her success, and a merchandising course is her only professional training. Traditional, classical taste runs through her entire collection of 30 pieces, most of imported fabrics with great emphasis on tone-on-tone silk jacquards and cotton. Handpainted silks are developed locally under Cydney’s supervision.” The article states that simplicity and elegance are Cydney’s trademarks. Her design elements include soft shoulders, culottes and natural earth tones, which are prominent 1980s characteristics. Compared to the Oriental Inspirations, this article shows a different side of Cydney, expressing her Canadian self and fashion sensitivity under Western influences.
