Portrait of Yamaguchi Momoe , 1980s Photograph Public
Photograph

This photograph shows Linda Tzang at her senior graduation at Windermere Secondary School in 1985. In her everyday life and on special occasions, Linda always chooses to wear Western clothing. She rejects wearing the cheongsam for two main reasons. First, she believes the dress has a restrictive form that only fits into a specific body type. The cut of the dress makes it uncomfortable for the wearer. Moreover, the cheongsam is associated with negative stereotypes due to its wide use in the service industry and the Western fascination with Orientalism in the 1980s and 1990s. The New Romantic Style has allowed Linda the agency to practice her rules and values. She also thinks it is more freeing to be a teenager in the 1980s than nowadays, as one’s clothing choices were influenced by their music taste rather than social media.
