Gold Ring , Unknown
Jewelry

This gold ring is part of the Yip family collection of jewelry that was passed on to Linda Yip, a fourth-generation Chinese genealogist and historian. Growing up rejecting her Chinese identity, as Linda came of age and found a new sense of self, she started to wear these family jewelry embedded with symbolism on special social occasions. On the ring, the character “Wan” has been associated with shamanistic rituals in the prehistoric era. It means “ten thousand years of long life” in Chinese. On the other hand, the fish on the ring symbolizes superfluity. The fish is also an emblem of wealth and abundance because it often appears in pairs and symbolizes happiness and harmony as the fish is happy in its natural habitat.
