Chinese-Style Shawl , 1990s
Garment

This shawl with deliberately Asian-themed colours and patterns was made by Linda Yip, a fourth-generation Chinese genealogist and historian. In Chinese visual culture, the peony signifies summer, love, and affection. It also represents hope for greater advancement. According to Linda, many Chinese Canadians of her generation went through a period of only wearing dark colours because they wanted to be invisible in the crowd and not be spotted for their visible differences. She started to feel comfortable wearing bright colours from her travel and university years onward, as she found a new sense of self and reconciled with her Chinese identity. Linda made this red shawl for a Thanksgiving when people gathered to celebrate cultural pride. Her design shows appreciation for Chinese culture and evokes a sense of occasion. Growing up in denial of her Chinese heritage to the desire of assimilation, making Chinese-inspired clothes embodies both aesthetic and therapeutic values to Linda, allowing her to reconstruct an identity that is both “Chinese” and “Canadian”.
