This photograph shows Joyce Wang in her early twenties, wearing a Momoe-inspired shirt and dress with a Japanese-style haircut. Joyce is a first-generation Chinese Canadian woman who came of age in the 1990s and immigrated to Canada in 2013 in search of a different way of living. Unlike many early Chinese immigrants who lacked financial resources and employment opportunities in Canada, Joyce was an experienced magazine editor and came to Canada through the Skilled Worker Program. Her immigration is more of a personal choice rather than a forced decision. Like Joyce, many new first-generation Chinese Canadians enjoyed a stronger sense of cultural pride and capital than the previous generations. Joyce forms a transnational fashion style because of her lived experiences – Japanese cultural influences, working in several large Chinese cities, and travelling between Canada and China over the past decade. Working as the owner of an online jewelry store, Joyce uses her selection of clothing accessories to build ongoing links and relationships with her different worldviews on both material and cultural levels.
