Contemporary Cheongsam I , 2010s
Dress

This contemporary cheongsam with blue and purple florals and short ruffled sleeves belongs to Tiffany Le, a Montreal-based artist who immigrated to Canada at five. The loose-fitted dress brings together Western-style sleeves and collar with Chinese buttons and imagery. The hybrid design captures both the aesthetic and desire of the diasporic Chinese Canadian women. It enables them to break free from the restrictive form of the cheongsam, and most importantly, the negative and sexualized connotations associated with the dress. Instead, the wearer gains empowerment to communicate their desired autonomy.
