Blue Collar , 2021

Oil and collage on canvas

I'm fascinated with the Victorian patient portraits, their personal stories and the methods of treating them - fresh air, exercise, gardening, green space - frightening echos of where we are now in the midst of the Covid Pandemic.
Leucotomy (the surgical cutting of white nerve fibres within the brain) came later in the 1940s and was barbaric in comparison to this natural, non-invasive treatment.
We still have lots to learn about the mind - it's ethereal, you cannot touch it - and with this work, I wanted to capture this mindset of doubt and make it visceral.
