Installation

108" x 42" x 36"

My selected installation, “Heartbeat in the Thigh Meat” was created using a variety of sculptural processes and materials. I created my figure first with a welded, metal armature that I then built a diorama-like environment on top of using spray foam, 3D modeled and printed miniatures, static grasses and paper pulp. Prominently, a series of animated neons depict a mosquito sucking blood from the figure. I created the neon works during a funded residency with Glas in Raleigh, NC. The installation also features a thermoformed plastic case in the shape of a surge protector that is housing a synthesizing and broadcasting circuit; using a pirated radio station, I broadcast audio clips for the installation comprised of misogynistic vintage advertisements, pop-music, Vivienne Westwood lectures, etc. Tangles of extension chords are woven into the ceiling of the installation space and lead the viewer’s eye back to the figure and the animated neon; discussing how Capitalistic systems in turn also rely on imbalances of power. The installation miniaturizes and makes symbolic instances of marginalization in our current society in hopes of envisioning a culture which may move past such over systems of abuse.
