Boy and Tower , 2021
61 x 46 cm (h x w)
Oil

Portrait of my grandson in a nonchalant mood in the evening on the first day of school.
Months later, he built the tower, an achievement he was proud of.
I combined the two important milestones into one painting.
I enjoyed painting the multi coloured semi transparent tiles which clipped on to each other form the walls of the tower. But what is the predominant subject?
The boy or his tower?
Both were to occupy the foreground, side by side. But it was the boy in the painting who looking fazed from his first day of school, who made eye contact with the artist, made up my mind.
Which grandmother who looking into the eyes of her grandson would not make him the star of the show?
