Lotus , 1964
180.5 x 97 cm (h x w)
Ink and colour on paper

Lotus is a modern ink painting rendered in a semi-abstract style. In the picture, the image of withering lotus is presented in a modern ink-wash style, characterised by the dynamic use of brushstrokes, heavy and light, of dry and wet ink. Meanwhile, the lotus is represented through artistic expression in an abstract style. As such, Western painting techniques and abstract thinking are perfectly blended with the traditional Chinese xieyi style which exemplifies in the swift execution and sure brushstrokes.
The painting embodies the aesthetics of withering in Daoist terms, hinting at the artist’s insight into human life. The appearance of the dried-up lotuses is rendered with patches of ink and washes. Contrasting with the gradations of black ink predominantly used in the picture, the composition is brightened up with a touch of red palette in the centre, which is symbolic of a moment of enlightenment.
