Self Portrait with Vest , 2021
230 x 150 cm (h x w)
Watercolor on paper

One of many self portraits Emily has made over the past year, “Self Portrait with Vest” is about self identity, cocooning, and metamorphosis. For many of us, the forced isolation of the past two years prompted introspection and a reevaluation of what is important. Self portraiture, as well as being merely convenient due to a lack of contact with other people, became a physical embodiment of that feeling, and a way to document the solitude. Learning watercolour painting during the summer of 2021 was also a way for her to connect with her paternal grandmother, an avid watercolorist who passed away while Emily was a young child.
