Description:
Stress causes an increase in white blood cells in the brain and cytokine release. Cytokines are proteins and when there are too many, can damage and escape the blood brain barrier and effect the cells that protect the central nervous system and molecules in the brain.

Bio:
Ni-ka Ford is an Academic Medical Illustrator for the Instructional Technology Group at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She creates didactic illustrations and 3D visualizations for scientific research, medical education and journal publications.
