Dorothy provides an example of neglected orphans in the person of their neighbour’s apprentice, a neglected boy whose ‘moral and religious instruction’ were sadly lacking. He had received no education and was frequently drunk. By writing her narrative, she hoped to protect the Green children from experiencing the same fate.
