Mother and Child , 20th Century

Mother and child is prevalent in African sculpture. The spiritual dimensions attached to motherhood are also reflected in the aesthetic canons of African sculpture. In Nigeria, emphasis is made on the force of inner character projected outward . In this aesthetic tradition, the head is magnificently elaborated in the pointed hairdo. The poise of the face reflects the inner fine character and the sense of certainty of the mother. Symmetry and balance convey the traditional way of life.
