I’ve created three pieces featuring Nina Simone. She’s a major influence and inspiration for me. Her words resonate with me. One of her songs, in particular, resonated with me during my residency. The process of collaging is very therapeutic for Darian. Darian creates collages from different sources such as online sources, photographs, books and magazines. Their experiences of being black, queer woman directs the art they create. Overarching themes in Darian’s collages are storytelling, black culture/history, and personal experiences from their life.
