Artist Statement

I’ve never tried a double exposure before, so I wanted to try one. I also rarely use black backgrounds for my portraits, so I thought I’d try one as well. The subject is Catherine, an alumni from Humber College’s photography program. She happened to be wearing a black hoodie the night I photographer her, so the portrait was originally black on black. The following day I went to Humber’s arboretum and took some pictures of the trees. It had snowed all day and I wanted to get some shots while there was still some snow on the branches. I went out when it wasn’t snowing. Unfortunately, a blizzard started as soon as I got there. It was also very windy which didn’t help. My camera was covered in snow by the time I finished. After I dried off my camera I started editing the shots in post production. Using a layer mask, I covered up the tree so it wouldn’t bleed over Catherine’s shoulders or her face. I also removed a logo on her hoodie as well as a necklace because they were distracting. I then increased the saturation of the tree to make the green stand out a little more.
