This article, published in Vital Signs in June of 1987, is among the earliest published work by the esteemed author of Wrapped in Rainbows (the definitive biography of Zora Neale Hurston) and the editor of the newly released critically acclaimed book, Gathering Blossoms Under Fire: The Journals of Alice Walker.
