Park(ing) Day , 2005

Does a parking space have to be used for parking? John Bela challenged that assumption in 2005, sketching alternative uses such as a miniature beach, an aquarium, or a cabaret. This inspired "Park(ing) Day," an annual event in which residents in hundreds of cities worldwide temporarily claim street parking for other uses – and foreshadowed a broader movement to repurpose urban streets (as when many cities turned parking spaces into outdoor dining areas during Covid-19).
