This piece is a representation of Marlene, a character from the Grimm fairytale, The Juniper Tree.” It is also one of three
different birds described among the seven variations of “The Juniper Tree” stories from different regions in Europe sourced
during the 17th-19th centuries. The use of a white dove in these stories brings deeper Christian religious themes and ideals of
purity in contrast to the two other birds, a raven and a magical green, red, and golden bird.
