Inspired by her observations of nature’s life phenomenon, Karpowicz’s paintings arise out of conjuring interactions of colour fields, dividing or connecting, illuminating the relationships in-between them. The subtle veils and layers of paint, like a mystery of time cloak memories, forming new encounters.

Breaths of colour contract and expand, pulsating from within as they oscillate between light and darkness, changing in luminosity.

The alluring reference to the lines of horizons becomes an evocative image of what is seen and known, and what is disappearing, imagined, hidden, and the unknown. The lines of horizons refer to what is perceptible and yet illusory with no beginning and no end, contemplating space and time, allowing the vastness to name the form.

In a world where stillness is rare, Karpowicz’s paintings rely on the moments of quietude. They offer the viewer a space to pause and reflect on their own experience.

Karpowicz grew up observing changes in light and colour in the landscape of Poland. She came to painting as a biologist, a scientist, and an observer of nature. Yet, it is in the abstract expression where she found the science she was seeking.

At a young age, she was compelled to leave her home country of Poland, then part of the Communist bloc, to live and paint in the United States, where freedom of expression was encouraged and respected. She graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1985 in New York City where she studied under Sean Scully. Gosha Karpowicz exhibited at Hopper House in Nyack, Equity Gallery, The Painting Center, and Anthroposophical Society in NYC, The Museum of Contemporary Art Elekrownia in Poland, amongst many others. She lives and works in New York City while embracing her recurring art visits to Europe.
