For more than two centuries, Norfolk Islanders have been laid to rest in this prime oceanfront location. The tombstones read like a who’s who of Norfolk Island history. Here you’ll find convicts from the First Fleet, soldiers and sailors, descendants of Bounty mutineers and other island residents, including beloved novelist, Colleen McCullough. The headstone inscriptions reveal often tragic details around cause of death and hints of the brutality of life in the Island’s 19th century convict era. This beach is a favourite location for many locals to enjoy the natural beauty of their island. What an honour for those who have passed on to be laid to rest in such an idyllic place. They won’t be forgotten – in fact I think present day Islanders often gain strength from those who have gone before them.
