Seminole Woman

I enjoyed working on this piece called “Seminole Woman.” As I did when I created “Red Wing” I read as much as I could about the Seminole while working on it. Most notably, she is wearing her hair with bangs and a tight bun in the back, typical for Seminole women in the 1750s-1900 period. The Seminoles have an interesting history. They never signed a peace treaty with the US Government upon the end of the war between the two. The Seminole never surrendered. They emerged from various Native American groups in what is now Georgia, Alabama, and Florida and now live in Florida and Oklahoma. Free African Americans and escaped slaves also assimilated into the Seminole people, taking on the name “Black Seminoles.” Every Seminole Indian born of a Seminole mother is a member of her clan. Clans are characterized by non-human entities that share traits like strength, courage, or endurance. The 8 Seminole clans are: Panther, Bear, Deer, Wind, Bigtown/Toad, Bird, Snake, and Otter. Clan members are not supposed to marry within their clan. Husbands traditionally lived in the wife's clan camp. Children inherit the clan of the mother. When the last female of a clan dies, the clan is extinct, as in the case of the Alligator. Panther is currently the largest clan in the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
