scratchboard

Ronnie Coleman is a legend in the bodybuilding community. He's an eight-time winner of the Mr. Olympia title. In his prime, Coleman was a massive sight to see in person. He was also known for lifting incredible amounts of weight during his torturous workouts. He's a former police officer and is retired from the sport of bodybuilding. I met him at a bodybuilding show in Texas around 1992 or 93. We had a photo taken of him flexing his arm next to me. His arm dwarfed my head. I did this piece on a British made version of scratchboard called scraperboard. It’s thin like oaktag paper but still coated with a light layer of clay and black ink. This material worked well for this piece. I was able to get a slightly different texture and look to it. I framed it in a black frame with a purple and gold mat to reflect his nickname, "King Ronnie."
