scratchboard

I did this piece right after I saw the news of the racist mass murder in Buffalo. I was heartbroken and angry over how senseless this act was. I thought I remembered her having a famous quote about hatred and found this one. This is the first time I wrote on a scratchboard piece. It’s a lot different than writing or painting words. It was challenging to get my tools to move in smooth curved directions. I used a stencil and a white pencil to outline the letters on the board. I then slowly worked on scratching them out with a #10 scalpel, which has a wider curved blade. The quote alongside her image sends a powerful message.
