In einem energischen und aufopfernden Appel hindert der Offizier, nach Bekanntwerden der Morde des Goldschmiedes Cardillac an seine Käufer, den Pöbel daran, ihn,(Cardillac) zu lynchen. Die aufgewühlte Menge, mit Messern und Säbeln bewaffnet, wird in Grau und Schwarztönen dargestellt, ebenso der Offizier. Diese einfärbige, grau- schwarze Szene bringt die Dramatik der Situation zur Geltung und bietet dem Betrachter einen interessanten Blick auf das Geschehen.

In an energetic and self-sacrificing appeal, the officer prevents the mob from lynching him (Cardillac) after the goldsmith Cardillac's murders of his buyers become known. The agitated crowd, armed with knives and sabres, is depicted in shades of grey and black, as is the officer. This monochrome, grey and black scene brings out the drama of the situation and offers the viewer an interesting view of the events.
