The individual gets severed from the entire set of identifications when he or she is disconnected from location. Jonathan Friedman (1999) Queue 1 shows a group of Chinese soldiers patrolling Tiananmen Square. They are arranged in a square array from tall to short, dressed in the same uniform and present well-trained movements. This painting is based on a photograph I took in Beijing 2019; due to the pandemic, that was my final visit to my motherland, China, up until now.
The painting creates discussions around the intention of the artist and explores the diaspora gaze. Through working with photographs, my process involves reconstructing memory, identity, place and time, of questioning one’s personal history and self-belonging. I have tried to present the complex relationships of dislocation and ambivalence caused by diaspora existence.
