There's lots of drawings a bit similar to this. But what I love about this one is how oppressed I was by the world and as a woman who was assumed to have three or four jobs and just get on with it, and absolutely no acknowledgement for the unpaid labour, or the whole position that I was… and trying to do my best. And this is me dressed, was one of my shows, because I worked all the way through, because I needed the money. It's also my way of expressing myself. So this was a show called Box Story. And it was the last in the series called The Daily Life Series, and it's a show about misfortune, and I wore a blue overall - I always wear an overall when I perform. This one is me, because we did a lot of touring of that show. We went to China, Europe, the States, Australia, so I'd take that blue overall with me, which my mum
pointed out was not very flattering. The sort of thing she would say - she was troubled by me being an artist, and there's the world. I'm holding the world. I'm pretty fed up with it. But as a painting I just like the fact that I've got myself so well in proportion in a kind of simple way.
