Symbols of The Self , 2022
fabric, solvent transfer, block printing ink

‘Symbols of The Self’ is a collection of related works encapsulating my lived experience of contrasting cultural identities. In both my video and multi-coloured patterned quilt, I have layered different symbols, images and themes, such as Ghanaian ‘Adinkra’ symbols, to represent the tensions of colonialism and its impact on personal identity. In my video, I have contrasted audios of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) rally, a neo-nazi and white supremacist organisation in South Africa, with Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana independence speech in 1957. My work aims to shine a light on the isolating nature of the mixed race experience, as a female and teenager.
